Yesterday, a two-day workshop on the law prohibiting sexual harassment of women ended in Feyzabad. 25 female and 15 male staff from the gender units of Badakhshan’s governmental institu-tions and civil society organisations participated. Gender units advocate women’s rights and ensure female participation at their respective institutions. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) financed and implemented the workshop togeth-er with the Department of Women’s Affairs.

Yesterday, a six-day workshop on transparency and publishing beneficial owners in the Afghan mining sector ended in New Delhi, India. 13 representatives of AEITI and the involved multi-stakeholder group consisting of relevant actors from the governmental, civil society and private sectors participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting good governance in the Afghan extractive sector supported the workshop technically and financially. Disclosing beneficial ownerships is a condition for full EITI membership.

Yesterday, Badakhshan University’s law and sharia faculties hosted a job fair in the provincial capital Feyzabad. The event aimed at familiarising senior students with job opportunities at legal and judicial institutions. 35 female and 36 male students took this opportunity. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan (RoL) supported the event.

Yesterday, the General Directorate of Insurance Affairs (GDIA) conducted a workshop for 10 supervisory GDIA staff to understand the basics of micro-insurance, its legal framework, monitoring and supervision. The GDIA is responsible for regulating and supervising insurance operators and sector development to promote the institutionalisation of an insurance culture in Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation helps to create an environment that enables private sector development and investments to boost economic growth.

Today, a ten-day workshop by the Women Initiative for Sustainable Energy (WISE) ended in Delhi, India. 30 female Afghans learned how to start a business in the sustainable energy sector. The German programme for institutional development in the Afghan energy sector (IDEA) implemented the workshop together with the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW). The Afghan-German Cooperation funded the activity at a total cost of about AFN 12 million.

For the next six months, 30 Afghan university graduates will learn how to set up and manage their businesses in the energy sector. The German Institutional Development for Energy in Afghanistan (IDEA) programme technically supports the activity in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW). The Afghan-German Cooperation finances the programme at a total cost of more than AFN 7 million.

Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation handed over a new building for the accounting institute and a micro hydropower plant to the local government in Badakhshan. Government officials, Provincial Council members, local elders and many others attended the event. The German Stabilisation Programme for Northern Afghanistan (SPNA) financed the buildings at a total cost of more than AFN 53.5 million. The new facilities benefit more than 5,500 local citizens.

Previously, these mines inspectors had participated in a Training of Trainers (ToT) – an activity run by the German programme for supporting good governance in the Afghan extractive sector. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the MoMP to organise the training and financed the entire activity.

The budget will be allocated to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF), administered by the World Bank. Since the fund’s creation in 2002, Germany has contributed almost AFN 47 billion. Germany is one of the biggest donors to the ARTF.

75 PRD employees will now enjoy working in a better registration office and applying their new skills making registration services in Balkh more effective. This will benefit one million residents in Balkh. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for Regional Capacity Development (RCD) supported this project at a total cost of about AFN 3.8 million.
