Kabul, 30th September 2018 - Yesterday, 30 young engineers from the Faculty of Electrical, Civil and Architecture in Kabul graduated from the programme Youth Entrepreneurs Support (YES). YES provides technical knowledge and entrepreneurship skills to young engineers. The programme also helps strengthening the relationship to private actors in the field of renewable energies in Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme “Institutional Development for Energy in Afghanistan” (IDEA) organised and funded the educational programme YES.

Kabul, 26th September 2018 – Today, government negotiations on development cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Federal Republic of Germany for 2018 ended successfully. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commits to invest about AFN 20 billion (EUR 234,06 million). Additional funding by the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) will be communicated shortly. Cooperation shall focus on good governance, sustainable economic development, urban development and municipal infrastructure as well as humanitarian assistance and stabilisation. Since 2001, the German government has invested about AFN 345 billion (EUR 4.06 billion) in Afghanistan.

Yesterday, the ground-breaking ceremony for three high school buildings took place in Samangan’s provincial capital Aybak. Provincial Education Department (PED) officials and Afghan-German Cooperation representatives of the attended the event. The facilities will provide an adequate learning environment for more than 5,400 students, both girls and boys. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) supports the PED in implementing the project and funds the school buildings’ construction at a total cost of about AFN 111 million.

Yesterday, a closing ceremony in Kabul concluded a 17-days advanced training on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for employees of the Afghan Ministry of Economy (MoEc). The training equipped 15 participants, including women, with advanced skills to monitor and evaluate development projects. The MoEc’s Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation (RBME) directorate and ACCORD Worldwide Consultancy facilitated the activity. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the training financially.

Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Academic Mining Education in Afghanistan (AMEA) facilitated a job application training, particularly dedicated to students of the Geoscience Faculty at Balkh University. More than 100 students participated in the seminar. The activity aimed at improving job prospects for graduates in the field of geoscience and mining.

Kabul, 30th August 2018 – Yesterday, officials of the Afghan Government, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) as well as KfW German Development Bank signed the agreements for a new project to start now: Kabul Riverfront Transformation (KARIT). The Afghan President Dr Ashraf Ghani, CEO Dr Abdullah Abdullah and officials from the German Embassy attended the top-level event. The German Government (German Federal Foreign Office) funds this project via KfW at a total cost of AFN 1.5 billion during the upcoming 30 months.

Taloqan, Takhar, 29th August 2018 – Yesterday, Takhar’s Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) and the Afghan-German Cooperation signed the contract for transmitting power supply to the district Hazar Sumuch in Taloqan, Takhar. More than 14,000 residents from the villages Gunbad, Kunjak and Hazar Sumuch will benefit from the project once it has been realised in about 14 months. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) supported DABS to identify the project and will now fund its implementation at a total cost of AFN 124 million.

Yesterday, a transparency forum on anti-corruption measures related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) took place in Kabul’s Government and Media Information Centre. The non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Transparency International and Integrity Watch Afghanistan arranged the event. High-level representatives of the Afghan government, civil society and international donors participated – more than 60 people in total. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Open Policy Advisory Fund (OPAF) funded the event and supported its implementation.

Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Academic Mining Education in Afghanistan (AMEA) handed over five fully-equipped classrooms for up to 280 students to Kabul Polytechnic University’s (KPU’s) Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology Department. In the past, the learning environment was often missing vital equipment. The activity is another step towards ensuring high-quality education for students at KPU. The equipment’s costs amount to AFN 2.3 million.

20 lecturers from ten pilot Teacher Training Centres (TTCs) participated in a six-day workshop in Mazar-e Sharif, Balkh. Attendees got familiar with a new teaching manual on human rights and gender. TTC master trainers conducted the workshop, supported by the Afghan-German Cooperation’s Basic and Secondary Education Programme for Afghanistan (BEPA). TTCs operate under the umbrella of the Afghan Ministry of Education’s Teacher Education Directorate (TED). More than 7,600 future teachers, including almost 3,000 women, will benefit from improved training.
