Media Promoting the Rule of Law?

This Tuesday, the Afghan-German Cooperation hosted another media meeting in Balkh’s capital Mazar-e Sharif
Together with the Social Association of Journalists in North Afghanistan (SAJNA). Topic: Generating Rule of Law Awareness – How can media contribute to raising awareness of the rule of law in Afghanistan? The conclusion: Even though the Afghan media has made a significant contribution in raising legal awareness, they can dedicate even more resources to this activity. Three legal experts and more than 70 journalists gathered to discuss media’s role in promoting the rule of law in Afghanistan.

Three Afghan experts, Mr Sayed Mohammad Jafar Mesbah, the Director of Balkh’s Department of Justice, Mr Taj Mohammad Paiwand, the Head of the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for the promotion of the Rule of Law (RoL) in Balkh and Ms Farzana Rahimi, journalist and civil activist, shared insights and expertise.

“The Rule of Law gives people real power and reinforces discipline as well as justice. It’s media that can carry these messages to the people”, Mr Mesbah underlined. “When it comes to our activities, such as legal conferences, awareness theatres, training, etc., we work with media representatives very closely. Therefore, I would like to encourage them to take the lead, to act and to create new dialogues to raise awareness of people, especially in legal fields.”, Mr Paiwand added.

Ms Farzana Rahimi addressed the question of how interested media are in covering legal topics: “Despite facing many challenges, media have been acting as a bridge between people, the Afghan government, and the international community. They informed people and gave them the confidence to have expectations and to ask public authorities to provide services and responses.”

During the Q&A session, the experts were questioned by more than 70 national and local TV, radio and newspaper journalists.
