For many Afghans, a regular supply of electricity still remains a dream, especially in rural areas. Missing or old line systems and ailing distribution networks lead to a high loss of electricity, also resulting in frequent power failures. While power connections in Kabul now reached more than 80% of the city’s population, the percentage of connections lies only at about 15% in the country’s rural areas. The German government has been supporting Afghanistan since 2002 to achieve a sustainable electricity supply. The main focus is on using renewable energy sources.
