A four-month project for strengthening women’s skills and their role in business ends tomorrow in Kabul. The Organization for Afghan Women Capacity and Knowledge (OAWCK) implemented the project called Empowering Women through Improving Business Skills. It included 48 training sessions, 12 advocacy sessions and 12 sensitisation sessions for 25 women entrepreneurs. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Open Policy Advisory Fund (OPAF) funded the project through its Mini-Fund for Women Empowerment.

Over the last two days, almost 70 officials of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVET-A) took part in a conference in Kabul, including women. Participants included the Head of TVET-A Ms Nadima Sahar, Provincial Education Directors (PEDs) from thirty-four provinces, and school headmasters. TVET-A presented TVET’s five-year strategy to their PEDs to enable them to plan for 2021. This is the eighth biannual PED coordination conference.

Yesterday, Kunduz administrative officials and the Director of the provincial Public Works Department (PWD) signed a contract for a road reconstruction in Kunduz. The contract signing took place in Kabul. More than 36,000 citizens will benefit from the reconstruction of the three-kilometre Bagh-e-Zarat Road in downtown Kunduz. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) supports the reconstruction work with a total of about AFN 116 million.

Yesterday, provincial authorities, the director of Lower Kunduz River Basin Agency (LKRBA) and Afghan-German Cooperation representatives kicked off the construction work of a flood protection wall in Baghlan. More than 30,000 residents will benefit from the project, which also includes the rehabilitation of the Baladori Intake. The work will protect Pol-e Khomri City and the Baladori Canal in the provincial capital from flooding. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) finances the construction at a total of about AFN 67.7 million. LKRBA will supervise the construction work with technical support from RIDF.

Yesterday, the operation of an extended power line and a newly constructed energy network in Hazar Sumuch District was initiated. The Takhar Provincial Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) director Mr Habibullah Poya, Takhar government officials, and representatives from the Afghan-German Cooperation took part in the inauguration. About 14,000 people directly benefit from the reliable electricity supply in the villages Hazar Sumuch and Kunjak. The construction works lasted 15 months. DABS implemented the project with close support of the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The Afghan-German Cooperation financed the project with a total amount of AFN 124 million.

On Sunday, Badakhshan officials and the Director of the provincial Public Works Department (PWD) signed a contract for the reconstruction of a nine-kilometre road in Feyzabad District. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) will support the reconstruction work of the Dehan-e-Sabat Road, which is financed by KfW Development Bank with a total cost of about AFN 188 million.

On Saturday, the reconstruction of a two-kilometre road in Taloqan District of Takhar Province began with the laying of the first stone. The reconstruction project starts at Pule-e-Jalat Village located five kilometres from downtown Taloqan along Kunduz-Takhar Highway and ends at Nowabad-e-Puleqak Village. Representatives of the local administration and Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD) attended the event. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) will fund the project at a total cost of about AFN 109 million and technically supports DRRD with its implementation.

Last week, on Wednesday, the government negotiations on development cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Federal Republic of Germany for 2020 ended successfully. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commits to invest an overall amount of about AFN 21.3 billion (EUR 240 million) for financial and technical cooperation in 2020. Further funding is provided by BMZ directly to non-governmental organisations, and in addition the German Federal Foreign Office is supporting Afghanistan with up to AFN 16 billion (EUR 180 million) for stabilisation projects as well as AFN 1.7 billion (EUR 19.4 million) for humanitarian assistance in 2020. Germany will thus fulfil its pledge at the 2016 Brussels Conference, where it committed to providing up to EUR 430 million per year in overall civilian assistance.
Construction of Flood Protection Wall in Balkh Kicks Off

Yesterday, the Governor of Balkh and the Deputy Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development together with Provincial Government Officials laid the foundation stone for constructing a 1.5-kilometre flood protection wall along the Balkh River in Sholgara District. About 40 participants from different local institutions as well as local elders attended the event that was celebrated at the Governor’s Office in Mazar-e Sharif. More than 24,000 inhabitants of five villages will benefit directly from this improved flood protection wall. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) finances the project at a total cost of about AFN 118 million. The Provincial Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD) will supervise the construction works with the technical support from RIDF.
