On Saturday, the Afghan-German Cooperation and the Provincial Director of the Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD) signed a contract for constructing a 1.5-kilometre flood protection wall along Balkh River in Sholgara District. A number of provincial officials attended the event that took place at the Governor’s Office in Mazar-e Sharif. More than 24,000 people living in five villages will benefit directly from this new flood protection wall. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) finances the project at a total cost of about AFN 118 million.

On Wednesday, a pool of experts from key institutions in the renewable energy sector shared their knowledge at a workshop with the Afghanistan Renewable Energy Union (AREU) at the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW). Sixty people, men and women, participated in discussions on how to promote renewable energy in the private sector. Experts helped disseminate updated information to AREU members as well as develop the capacity of its member organisations. In attendance were representatives from MEW, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD). The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) supported the workshop.

Yesterday in Mazar-e Sharif, the Governor and Deputy Governor of Balkh, the Director of the Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD) of Balkh Province, and other provincial government officials along with people elders and representatives inaugurated two reconstructed roads. The newly improved roads benefit more than 100,000 residents in the area, providing them with safer and easier access to the city and surrounding areas. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) supported the DRRD with the implementation of the two projects and funded the reconstruction with a total cost of approximately AFN 188 million.

Yesterday in Badakhshan, provincial officials, representatives from the Ministry of Transport as well as the Road Operation and Maintenance Department (ROMD) inaugurated the completion of operations and maintenance work along the 103-kilometre Feyzabad - Kishim main road. About 1.2 million people directly benefit from these reparations. The ceremony took place at the site in Kuzur-e Furghambol, Argo District. The ROMD (formerly Public Works Department) and the Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) coordinated all construction and repair work at a total cost of about AFN 97 million.

Yesterday, the governor of Badakhshan, together with the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport, the Director of Roads Operation and Maintenance Department (ROMD) and provincial officials marked the first day of the construction of a ten-kilometre road in Feyzabad. The road will connect Feyzabad City to Lai Aba villages and neighbouring districts. The project is part of the rehabilitation of a 74-kilometre road. Its aim is to connect Feyzabad City and the Yawan District with an ‘all-weather road’ that will benefit about 600,000 citizens. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) is supporting the construction with a total amount of around AFN 206 million.

Today, the last of a four-day self-assessment and planning workshop for Afghanistan’s re-validation into the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Standard took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Amongst the participants were five parliamentarians from the Natural Resources and Environment Commission (NRC) and representatives of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP), including the Deputy Minister Wali Ullah Zadran. In attendance were also representatives from the Afghanistan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (AEITI), the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Revenue Development Foundation (RDF), the World Bank, USAID, civil society, the private sector as well as two representatives from the EITI Secretariat Oslo. The Afghan-German Cooperation facilitated the workshop.

Yesterday, the Acting and Deputy Governor of Takhar and Deputy Director of Taloqan River Basin Agency (TRBA) laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 1.5-kilometre flood protection wall. The construction work will also include the rehabilitation of an irrigation channel to provide a more reliable water supply. A number of provincial officials in charge of governmental institutions also participated in the ceremony. More than 20,000 people will benefit from the improved irrigation of agricultural land and flood protection. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) is supporting the TRBA in the project implementation as well as financing with about AFN 122 million.

Five schools taking part in piloting the dual track Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, also known as Ostad Shagerdi, have finished renovations in four provinces, including Kabul, Badghis, Baghlan and Balkh. With the support of the Afghan-German Cooperation, the Jamhuriat High School, the Kabul Mechanical Institute as well as the Accounting and Management Institutes of Badghis, Baghlan-e Jadid and Mazar-e Sharif have all benefitted from facility improvements. The work was conducted between July and October 2019 and has a combined value of more than AFN 6.7 million.

A three-day event called National Civil Society Week ended on Friday in Herat. The Afghan Institute for Civil Society (AICS) coordinated this event that brought together around 150 representatives, including 41 women, from civil society, the government, academia, the private sector, the United Nations (UN) and media from across the country. AICS aims at supporting Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Afghanistan in realising their potential for the country’s development. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Open Policy Advisory Fund (OPAF) provided financial and technical support for the event.

Yesterday, the State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Mr Martin Jaeger, together with Dr Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi, Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Finance, affirmed the continued German support to Afghanistan. By the end of 2019, the German government via the BMZ is making an additional AFN 6.2 billion (EUR 72 million) available to Afghan-German Cooperation projects, bringing the total commitment in the year 2019 to AFN 18.1 billion (EUR 211 million).
